The last time the world found itself at war on a global scale, millions of lives were lost, and nearly every continent was affected by the evils of war. The Perth Mint released a series of gold and silver coins in 2013 commemorating World War II, with specific designs honoring the combination of American and Australian forces to victory in the War in the Pacific.

During World War II, the War in the Pacific officially began in full when the Japanese attacked the US Naval Station at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The American fleet was destroyed, except for its vital aircraft carriers, which had been out on maneuvers at the attack time.

Throughout the ensuing four years of warfare, the United States and its vital Allies in the region, most notably Australia, fought tooth and nail with the Japanese Imperial Navy to wrest control of countless island chains back from the clutches of Japan. In what became known as an island-hopping campaign, the Americans and Australians would engage in some of the wars bloodiest battles for the region’s freedom.

On the reverse face of these 1/10 oz Australian Gold War in the Pacific coins, you’ll find the image of the perched eagle in the center of the design, serving as a barrier between the Australian flag on the left and the Stars and Stripes of the United States on the right. An exact depiction of the eagle stands today at a memorial in the center of Canberra, Australia’s federal capital.

The coin’s obverse face has the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. This face includes engravings of Her Majesty’s name, the nation of issue, year of issue, and the coins’ weight, purity, metal content, and face value.

The Perth Mint is Australias oldest operating facility, having opened in 1898 as the third and final of the Royal Mint facilities in Australia. Today it operates independently of the federal government’s Royal Australian Mint and is owned by Western Australia.
